How OPPO Turned Sound and Picture Quality into India’s Favourite Selfie Phone

OPPO’s story starts in 2004 in Dongguan, when Tony Chen launched the brand under the BBK family. Its first products were MP3 players and DVD and Blu-ray players, all built around how good they sounded and looked. That focus on sound and picture quality became the brand’s foundation, and it never really left.

When mobiles arrived in 2008, followed by full smartphones around 2011, OPPO carried the same instinct forward. Instead of competing on every feature, it picked the front camera and built the F-series as the selfie expert. In 2014, VOOC fast charging solved the other big frustration, because a dead battery means no selfie at all. Picture quality and practicality now worked together.

India was where this idea found its audience. OPPO set up a super-factory in Greater Noida and started building phones locally, then let familiar faces like Janhvi Kapoor, Pooja Hegde, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Ishaan Khatter tell the story. Gig workers got their own #ZindagiKeRealHeroes campaign. The ads keep it simple, pairing one feature with one relatable moment, from the Reno16’s 3D-style billboard stunt to the F35’s festive selfie film with Bobby Deol and Divyenndu Sharma.

Today, the brand is doubling down on that picture-first identity. It has worked with Hasselblad on cameras since 2022, introduced its imaging brand Lumo in 2025, and launched the Find N5 foldable. With AI in ColorOS and features like the Reno16’s AI Remix Collage, OPPO continues to build for people who care how their moments look.
