JioStar Expands AI Content Strategy Following Strong Response to Mahabharat Series

JioStar is set to accelerate its investment in artificial intelligence-driven content production after the successful launch of its AI-generated series, Mahabharat: Ek Dharmayudh, on JioHotstar. The move signals the company’s growing confidence in AI as a tool for large-scale content creation and audience engagement.

The 100-episode adaptation of the Mahabharat reportedly garnered 6.5 million views on its first day, significantly exceeding the platform’s average viewership levels. Encouraged by the response, JioStar is now developing a broader slate of AI-generated projects that will be written, animated, voiced, and edited using artificial intelligence.

As part of this expansion, the company plans to recruit around 80 AI specialists and engineers to strengthen its generative AI capabilities. The initiative is being led by Stephan Bugaj, who joined JioStar earlier this year to head the company’s AI content strategy.

Several projects are already in development, including Makaraj, a feature film titled Hanuman, and a range of short-form micro-dramas. The strategy positions JioStar among the first mainstream media companies in India to scale AI-generated entertainment across multiple formats.

While the Mahabharat series received criticism for occasional visual inconsistencies and rendering errors, JioStar believes advancements in AI technology will continue to improve production quality. The company’s latest push reflects a broader industry trend as media organisations increasingly explore AI-powered storytelling and content creation workflows.
