As the FIFA World Cup 2026 kicks off across North America, Meta is ensuring its platforms become the default destination for football conversation – rolling out a sweeping set of match-day features across Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, Threads and Messenger.
The updates range from live scores and real-time fan communities to AI-powered experiences and themed stickers, with Meta partnering across broadcasters, national teams, players and creators to keep content flowing throughout the tournament.
Threads is leaning hardest into live culture. The platform is hosting Live Chats with football personalities – including Sergio Agüero and Ian Wright – before, during and after matches, alongside team badges, custom emoji reactions and dedicated match-day communities.
Instagram has introduced a World Cup hub that surfaces real-time updates, top Reels and Stories through an enhanced search experience. A new AI-powered “Goal!” voice effect lets users send football-themed audio messages complete with animations – small but telling evidence of how platforms are now competing on emotion, not just information.
Facebook is going further with a Football Mode featuring themed reactions and a virtual jersey try-on powered by AI, letting fans drape themselves in national colours before posting to stories or profiles. WhatsApp, meanwhile, has swapped the standard football emoji for Adidas’ official Trionda match ball and added sticker packs, video-calling effects and a football directory housing scores, highlights and team updates.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 runs from June 11 to July 19, co-hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States. Argentina enter as defending champions.
