Diageo India has begun a new chapter for McDowell’s No.1, pairing an upgraded blend with a refreshed visual identity as the 125-year-old brand adapts to changing consumer expectations. The move reflects the broader premiumisation of India’s whisky category, where quality, craftsmanship and brand experience now matter alongside affordability. With the relaunch, McDowell’s No.1 aims to strengthen its position in the mass-premium segment while holding on to the familiarity and legacy it has built.
At the heart of the revamp is a new blend featuring select imported Scotch, Indian malts and premium grain spirits. It is matured in select oak and American barrels and shaped by blending expertise from both India and Scotland, according to Diageo India. The product upgrade comes with a redesigned bottle and a contemporary visual identity, intended to give the brand a more premium and distinctive presence on retail shelves.
The transformation draws on consumer research across 11 markets involving more than 10,000 consumers, which Diageo India says guided its approach to evolving the brand for a new generation. Ruchira Jaitly, Chief Marketing Officer at Diageo India, said the evolution responds to changing expectations around quality, craftsmanship and experience, while preserving the trust and familiarity the brand has earned over decades.
With annual sales of more than 30 million cases, McDowell’s No.1 remains a significant name in India’s beverage alcohol landscape. The relaunch underscores Diageo India’s focus on evolving established brands to match shifting preferences and the growing importance of premium experiences, marking a new phase in the brand’s 125-year journey.
