Agoda Reports Rising Demand for Slow Travel Destinations in India

Agoda has recorded a sharp rise in travel interest across Dharamshala, Rishikesh and Uttarkashi, signalling a growing preference among Indian travellers for slower, quieter holidays over crowded tourist circuits – a shift increasingly described as “hushpitality.”

The trend aligns with Agoda’s 2026 Travel Outlook report, which found that relaxation was the primary motivation for travel among 67% of Indian respondents. The growing interest in these Himalayan destinations suggests travellers are rethinking what a meaningful holiday looks like, with many now prioritising distance from urban noise, closeness to nature, and an unhurried pace.

Dharamshala led the surge with a 154% year-on-year jump in accommodation searches, drawing travellers to its Tibetan Buddhist culture, meditation centres and forest trails. Rishikesh followed with a 65% increase, anchored by its yoga traditions, wellness retreats and riverside ashram stays along the Ganga. Both destinations saw strong domestic interest, alongside inbound searches from the US, Japan, Singapore, Australia, Thailand and the UAE.

Uttarkashi, a quieter emerging destination in Uttarakhand, registered a 17% rise in searches, appealing to travellers seeking a more unmediated mountain experience, with notable interest from South Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan and Nepal.

Gaurav Malik, Country Director, Indian Subcontinent & Indian Ocean Islands at Agoda, said Indian travellers are increasingly seeking holidays built around time, space and simplicity, and that Agoda aims to make such experiences more accessible through the right stay at the right price.

Agoda offers access to over 6 million properties, 130,000+ flight routes and 300,000+ bookable activities via its app and website.
