Diet Coke shortage turns into viral trend in India

A severe shortage of Diet Coke in India has unexpectedly transformed the beverage into a viral lifestyle trend, with consumers across major cities turning the scarcity into a social media phenomenon.

The shortage, which became noticeable in April, was triggered by disruptions in aluminium can supply chains linked to tensions affecting shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz. Since Diet Coke in India has largely been sold in canned format, the disruption significantly impacted availability across retail stores, restaurants, and quick-commerce platforms.

As shelves emptied in cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Pune, panic-buying and online conversations quickly followed. Influencers and young consumers began hosting “Diet Coke parties,” turning the beverage into a symbol of exclusivity and internet culture.

To address the shortage, Coca-Cola India has reintroduced Diet Coke in 200 ml glass bottles across select markets. However, the return has come at significantly higher prices, with bottles retailing close to Rs 100 each – nearly three times the price of standard cans.

The premium pricing, combined with limited availability, has further amplified the product’s desirability. Several cafes and social media creators have incorporated Diet Coke-themed drinks, merchandise, and events into their content, positioning the beverage as a “social currency” among urban youth.

Quick-commerce platforms such as Blinkit have also witnessed strong demand, with six-packs reportedly listed at around Rs 480.

Industry observers believe prices may remain elevated until global aluminium supply chains stabilise, but for now, the shortage has turned Diet Coke into one of India’s most unexpected viral consumer trends.
