India’s food industry is preparing for a significant labelling change as the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) introduces a standardised logo for vegan food products. The new regulation will become mandatory from July 1, 2027, ensuring that consumers can easily identify genuine vegan products on store shelves and online platforms.
The logo features a green “V” topped with a plant sprout symbol, with the word “VEGAN” displayed below and enclosed within a green square border. FSSAI has also laid out specific design guidelines covering dimensions, spacing, and typography to maintain consistency across all products.
The initiative aims to eliminate confusion between vegan foods and products that may contain animal-derived ingredients. Only food items that fully comply with FSSAI’s vegan standards will be permitted to use the logo. This means products must be free from animal-based ingredients, additives, and processing aids, including dairy, honey, and other animal-derived components.
As plant-based diets continue to gain popularity, the move is expected to improve transparency, strengthen consumer trust, and simplify purchasing decisions. The standardised logo will create a clear and recognisable identity for vegan products while encouraging greater compliance with food labelling regulations.
With implementation set for 2027, brands now have time to align their packaging and certification processes with the new requirements.
