WhatsApp Adds Built-In AI Messaging Assistant
WhatsApp has announced the rollout of a new AI-powered feature called “Writing Help”, designed to assist users in rewriting, proofreading, and adjusting the tone of their messages directly within the app.
The tool, developed by Meta, offers real-time suggestions to help users express themselves more clearly or creatively. Options include rephrasing messages in a professional, humorous, or supportive tone-catering to a variety of communication needs.
Privacy-First Approach with Meta’s Technology
At the core of this feature is Meta’s Private Processing technology, which ensures end-to-end privacy. According to Meta, neither WhatsApp nor Meta can view the user’s original message or the AI-generated suggestions—addressing key privacy concerns often raised with AI-driven tools.
In an example shared by WhatsApp, the simple message “Please don’t leave dirty socks on the sofa” was transformed into a light-hearted version:
“Breaking news: Socks found chilling on the couch. Please move them.”
Challenging External AI Tools Like ChatGPT
With “Writing Help,” WhatsApp appears to be positioning itself against external AI platforms like ChatGPT, offering users a seamless, in-app alternative for composing smarter or more engaging messages.
While the feature brings convenience and creativity, some users may choose to avoid AI assistance-especially in personal conversations with close friends and family—preferring to keep their messaging style authentic.
How to Use the Feature
Users can access “Writing Help” by tapping the new pencil icon that appears while drafting a message. From there, they can choose to rephrase or shift the tone of their text using the built-in AI tool.
