Hollywood Pushes Back as Paramount–WBD Mega Merger Faces Industry Uproar

More than 1,400 actors, directors, and filmmakers have come together to oppose the proposed $111 billion merger between Paramount Global and Warner Bros. Discovery, raising concerns over its long-term impact on the entertainment ecosystem.

Prominent names including Emma Thompson, Ben Stiller, Javier Bardem, Kristen Stewart, and Glenn Close have signed an open letter urging regulators to block the deal. Addressed to California Attorney General Rob Bonta, the letter argues that the merger would significantly reduce competition by shrinking the number of major U.S. studios, limiting opportunities for creators.

The signatories warn that consolidation at this scale could lead to fewer film and television projects, widespread job losses, increased production costs, and reduced content diversity for audiences globally. Industry voices, including Damon Lindelof, have echoed these concerns, highlighting how large-scale mergers historically result in fewer creative outputs and employment opportunities.

On the other side, Paramount Skydance has defended the merger, stating it would enable greater investment in content, support talent across career stages, and expand global storytelling reach. CEO David Ellison has also indicated plans to maintain both studios as separate entities while increasing theatrical releases.

The deal now awaits shareholder approval and regulatory clearance, as the industry continues to recover from disruptions like the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes, and the growing influence of tech platforms on content consumption.
