Founded in 1958 by Dhirubhai Ambani, Reliance Industries is today a Fortune 500 company and India’s largest private sector corporation, now led by Mukesh Ambani. He reaffirms this belief in the conglomerate’s documentary, Parvah Hai Toh Parivar Hai, which centres on its founding philosophy – We Care. The roughly 45-minute film, currently streaming on YouTube, explores what family means to the Ambanis and, by extension, to the institution they built.
Mukesh recalls his father saying, “Rather than relying on family, I will find the best people and make them my family” – a philosophy that today extends to over 4.19 lakh employees across retail, telecommunications, media and entertainment, and energy businesses.
The Ambani children – Akash, Anant and Isha – who lead the group’s infocomm, new energy and retail businesses respectively, all reflect on this philosophy in the film. Anant speaks of being taught to care for others before oneself, Isha describes family as a steadying force through uncertainty, and Akash calls Reliance “not our extended family, but our true family.”
Originally created for Reliance employees and their families, the documentary grew into a wider story. It was produced by Guneet Monga and Achin Jain’s Sikhya Entertainment, directed by Disha Rindan, with lyrics by Prasoon Joshi and music composed by Shankar Mahadevan, Siddharth Mahadevan and Souumil.
