Instagram will discontinue its end-to-end encrypted messaging feature starting May 8, 2026, marking a significant shift in how private conversations are handled on the platform. The update, confirmed by Meta through an official notice, states that users will no longer have access to encrypted chats after this date.
End-to-end encryption ensures that only the sender and receiver can read messages, keeping them secure from third-party access. With this feature being phased out, Instagram is stepping back from offering this additional layer of privacy within its messaging system.
Meta has advised users to download any important messages or media from their encrypted chats before the deadline. Instructions for downloading data will be provided within the app, although users may need to update to the latest version of Instagram to access this option.
The decision comes as Meta cites low user demand for encrypted messaging on Instagram. While the company had introduced the feature as part of its broader privacy push, it appears that adoption did not meet expectations.
At the same time, the move aligns with increasing regulatory scrutiny around encrypted platforms worldwide. Authorities in several regions have raised concerns about the misuse of encrypted communication channels for illegal activities.
For users prioritising secure messaging, alternatives remain available. Platforms like WhatsApp, Signal, and Telegram continue to offer end-to-end encryption as a core feature.
This change highlights Instagram’s evolving priorities, balancing user behaviour, platform strategy, and regulatory pressures.
