The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to bring the IPL 2027 mini-auction back to India, ending a three-year run of overseas venues, while deferring a decision on the future of the Impact Player rule.
The decisions were taken at the IPL Governing Council meeting on September 15, with the BCCI yet to finalise the Indian city that will host the auction. Reports suggest the venue will be determined after assessing hotel availability and other logistical requirements.
The move follows concerns from IPL franchises over the operational load of taking large team delegations overseas for a mini-auction. The auction was last held in India in Kochi in 2023, with Dubai, Jeddah and Abu Dhabi hosting successive editions since – including the 2025 mega-auction in Jeddah and the 2026 auction in Abu Dhabi.
Since the 2027 event will be a mini-auction rather than a mega-auction, the scale of squad restructuring will be lower – a factor that appears to have influenced the decision to hold it domestically. More than 100 hotel rooms are expected to be needed for at least a couple of nights across all 10 franchises, BCCI officials, players and support staff, with the search complicated by the auction planning overlapping India’s peak wedding season between October and December.
The Governing Council also discussed the Impact Player rule but stopped short of a final call for IPL 2027, with the matter expected to return to the agenda at another meeting in about a month. For now, the BCCI’s immediate task is identifying a city with the hotel capacity to host the event.
