OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT for Teens, a new experience designed to help teenagers learn, think critically and use AI with stronger safety protections.
The experience combines learning tools with safety features, including Study Mode, Responsible Homework Reminders, Quizzes and Learning Visualizations, along with Study Hours that let teens or parents set times when Study Mode is enabled by default. Users identified as under 18, or who state they are between 13 and 17, will be automatically placed into the Teens experience.
Stronger protections cover areas such as self-harm, violence, eating disorders, dangerous activities, and sexually explicit or graphic content. Parents with linked teen accounts get access to Parental Controls, Quiet Hours and safety notifications in limited high-risk situations, while teens receive more frequent break reminders during extended use.
As part of the launch, OpenAI hosted ‘Open Dialogues on Youth Safety and AI’ in Mumbai, featuring actors and authors Tisca Chopra and Soha Ali Khan, who spoke on navigating AI as parents. The company also released its ‘Parents’ Guide to Learning with ChatGPT’ to help families set up controls and build healthy AI habits at home.
Pragya Misra, Head of Strategy & Global Affairs, India, OpenAI, said young people shouldn’t have to choose between opportunity and protection, and benefit most when the adults around them stay involved and help build age-appropriate boundaries.
Together, the initiatives aim to support safer, age-appropriate AI use for teens while equipping parents with better tools.
