The App That Ditched the Feed and Built an Empire on Disappearing Content

In 2011, three Stanford students built a simple idea in a dorm room – a photo that vanishes after viewing. Launched as “Picaboo” before rebranding to Snapchat that September, the app was co-founded by Evan Spiegel (now CEO), Bobby Murphy (CTO, still leading AR), and Reggie Brown, who pitched the original concept before exiting early.

What set Snapchat apart was its refusal to play by feed-first rules. It opens straight to the camera. Snaps disappear after viewing, Stories vanish in 24 hours, and Snap Map offers opt-in live location sharing. Lenses effectively created AR filter culture, while Memories and Snapstreaks kept users engaged and honest.

Beyond messaging, Snapchat evolved into a content ecosystem – Spotlight for short-form video, Discover for curated shows, and Snapchat+ for premium perks, with creators earning through ad revenue share.

The platform has now leaned hard into AI-driven advertising: AI Sponsored Snaps let users chat directly with brand agents, Sponsored AI Lenses turn prompts into co-branded content, and the Imagine Lens brings AI image generation into conversations – making ads part of the chat itself.

Backed by tools like Unified Attribution and the App Power Pack, Snapchat claims a 10% lift in brand awareness and 12% higher ad recall than scroll-based feeds. Brands like Wendy’s, Comfrt, Laneige and Tinder have already cashed in.

With its July 2026 Samsung India collaboration featuring 60 Gen Z creators, Snapchat is proving it’s no longer just a “teen app” – it’s where Gen Z decision-makers actually live.
