Warner Bros. Discovery Pulls the Plug on Standalone discovery+ in India

Warner Bros. Discovery is shutting down its standalone discovery+ app in India, with the platform set to fully discontinue on November 3, 2026. New subscriptions through the app and third-party providers stopped from September 3.

For monthly subscribers, auto-renewal will halt starting October 3, with access continuing until each user’s next billing date. Annual subscribers whose billing cycles fall between October 3 and November 3 will similarly not be auto-renewed, retaining access until their current cycle wraps up. Those with billing periods stretching beyond November 3 will receive a pro-rated refund for the unused portion of their subscription.

Importantly, the shutdown doesn’t mean discovery+ content disappears from India altogether. Warner Bros. Discovery’s library of shows and movies will continue to be accessible through a network of partner platforms, including Amazon Prime Video Channels, Jio TV+, Jio TV, Tata Play Binge, Dish TV VZY and Playbox TV — effectively shifting distribution from a dedicated app to an aggregator-led model.

The move reflects a broader pattern among global streaming players recalibrating their India strategy, favouring bundled and channel-based distribution over maintaining standalone apps in a market where subscriber acquisition costs remain high and content is increasingly consumed through existing telecom and platform bundles. Rather than compete head-on for direct app downloads, Warner Bros. Discovery appears to be prioritising reach through partnerships that plug its content into ecosystems consumers are already using — a shift that trades standalone brand visibility for wider, lower-friction access to its catalogue.
